There are two types of gas stations: the full-service kind, where an attendant is on hand to fill up your tank as per your request; and the self-service kind, where you fill your tank by yourself.
Stop the car with the car's fuel filler opening next to the pump, and turn off the engine.
If you tell the attendant the fuel type, amount you would like to put in or the amount of money you would like to pay, they will refuel your car for you.
Example phrases:
"Regular Man-Tan (regular, full tank)"
"20 liters, regular"
"2,000 yen, regular"
There are three fuel types at gas stations in Japan:
"Regular unleaded"
"High-octane"
"Diesel"
Refuel the car using the suitable fuel type.
Depending on the gas station, payments may only be made in cash and credit cards may not be accepted.
When using a gas station where you refuel yourself.
Stop the car with the car's fuel filler opening next to the pump, and turn off the engine.
Select the payment method.
Choose from
"Regular unleaded"
"High-octane"
"Diesel"
At this point, you can select the amount of fuel or monetary amount.
If you refuel with the incorrect type of fuel, the car will break down and become unable to move.
Be sure to refuel with the fuel type suitable to the car.
Refuel. Open the fuel filler opening, insert the pump nozzle all the way, and refueling will begin when you squeeze the lever.
Refueling automatically stops when the selected amount of fuel or monetary amount is reached.
Refueling also automatically stops when the tank becomes full.
(Do not forcibly continue to refuel.)
Receive the change and/or receipt.
Depending on the gas station, payments may only be made in cash and credit cards may not be accepted.
Also, the method of calculating the bill may differ, such as having it calculated by entering the number of the pump you used to refuel into the payment machine.
